Have Old Progams Came Back?

Several years ago I use to download many songs.  It was ok to download in those days.  So many things are different from then.  I heard you could no longer download unless you paid a fee of some sort.  I have decided to get back into computers.  I have more time know and would like to find out more about downloading programs.  A friend of mine has a neat program on her computer.  She told me to go to Ares Download Free and I would be able to get the same program that she has.  It looks like it will work like the old programs did.
