L-Arginine and Your Heart

L-Arginine is an important supplement for those with many types of heart disease.  Heart failure, for instance, is caused by a lack of blood flow to the heart. Any supplement that can improve this will be useful to anybody with this dangerous condition. L-Arginine is such a supplement because it is converted by enzymes in the body to nitric oxide, a well known vasodilator that enables blood to flow more freely around the body.

However, the one situation in which L-arginine should not be used is immediately after a heart attack. In such cases it is believed that the effects of cardiac shock can be aggravated with very negative results.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a condition whereby the heart has to beat stronger and so increase the pressure in the arteries in order to satisfactorily circulate the blood. This places an excessive strain on your heart than can endanger life if the pressure becomes excessive. A vasodilator such as nitric oxide can enable the arteries to offer less resistance to stretching, so that less pressure is needed to maintain a good flow of blood. A supplement of L-arginine can therefore help to reduce blood pressure to a more manageable level.
