Several years ago a so-called polypill for lower blood pressure was announced to great fanfare. The medication is called a “polypill” because it combines multiple drugs including those to reduce cholesterol, blood pressure and blood clots.
The drug makers reported that this would be a major step forward in protecting people from heart disease and predicted that most adults could benefits by taking it.
Actual test results tell a different story. Blood pressure reductions were disappointing and much less than those obtained with simpler blood pressure medications. Also, the combined side effects and other health risks from such a cocktail of drugs is just not acceptable.
