There are different types of aquarium medications. Some of these medications are given to the fish and other organisms in the tank for the prevention of certain diseases. Others, however, are solely formulated for the treatment of already existing diseases, and others are simply applied for the disinfection and overall cleaning of the tank. The type of medication ultimately dictates how you will apply the solution. If your goal is to disinfect, you need only perform your regular cleanup. Then, you apply the cleaning agent, which may be formulated to kill algae or bacteria. If some fish are already sick though, you may need to give them aquarium medications separate from other fish and organisms. You have to place the infected fish in a separate or quarantine tank. There, you may give them their needed medication. For wounded fish, you need to apply topical medication. This means that you actually have to apply the medicine on the wound; the medicine is not the type that you just drop inside the tank.
